According to interviews cited in the report:
• Shift on safety philosophy: Employees claim that Elon Musk has pushed to make the model less constrained, viewing traditional AI safety guardrails as a form of censorship rather than protection.
• Management confusion: Staff describe a chaotic decision-making process one executive sets a direction, another reverses it, and others are unaware of either move. This has reportedly created uncertainty and slowed progress.
• OpenAI pressure: The internal focus on catching up with OpenAI is said to be draining morale. Employees argue that many of xAI’s releases mirror what OpenAI shipped a year earlier, leaving little room for bold experimentation. As one insider summarized: chasing last year’s roadmap isn’t how you overtake the leader.
